Transportation

Transportation in New York and in Staten Island is pretty reliable. Private and public transportation options are the AirTrain (elevated airport train), train, subway, ferries, buses, taxi cabs, and car service (Staten Island 'taxi' cabs). Several services have online (ticket) purchase options or contactless payments. Looking for free? The Staten Island Ferry is free, 24/7, and with a magnificent Statue of Liberty view!

Transportation

You can find reliable transportation all around New York City and within Staten Island. Make sure you have access to their web sites, apps, or social media platforms to purchase tickets, 

AirTrain

The AirTrain is an airport service that goes around terminals and other stops, with subway or bus connections, car rental area, or parking lots.

  • The AirTrain is available at the JFK and Newark airports.

  • AirTrains have a special fare if you take them from a terminal to a subway station. They are free within the airport/terminals.

  • You can use the same Metrocard for the JFK AirTrain and the subway, but you will need to pay the fare per ride. You will be able to purchase the AirTrain ticket outside each station with any debit/credit card or cash.

  • You can bring the luggage cart inside each train.

Subway

Subway, metro, railway, elevated train, train, light rail are probably the names you will see for this major public transportation.

  • The subway in NY is run by the MTA and each ride is $2.75.

  • You can do many NY subway and bus transfers within two hours with the same Metrocard or OMNY ride/ticket.

  • You can purchase Metrocard tickets in almost all the subway stations, but you can also pay through the OMNY system, which is contactless, with an OMNY card or your mobile device.

  • In Staten Island, you can take the Staten Island Railway (SIR), which is an elevated train that goes from north to south within Staten Island. You can pay with Metrocard, contactless card, or OMNY: https://new.mta.info/agency/staten-island-railway

  • In Staten Island, you can do transfers between the SIR and public buses.

  • Tips: Download the map to learn about all the subway stops available or use interactive maps to see what time the next train comes!

Buses

Buses are available all around New York City and you can transfer from bus to bus with one single Metrocard ride ticket.

  • Pay your fare onboard with your Metrocard (no longer valid in 2025), contactless debit/credit card, or the new contactless OMNY card.

  • Many NY buses are 24/7, but some are limited (available on certain days or specific schedule).

  • Don't wait for the bus on the cold! You do not need to wait for the bus at the bus stop when it's freezing or too warm. You can see live when the next bus will arrive on apps or Google Maps.

  • Take the S62, S92, S93 (from Brooklyn), or express buses (from Manhattan) to go to our CSI campus.

  • You can make as many transfers as possible from a subway to a bus, bus to bus, bus to subway, without paying again, usually within a 2-hour frame.
